Mount Joy may be getting a new addition. A construction company, Sassoon Constructions Inc., has submitted an application to the City of Markham for a zoning by-law amendment to permit a high-density mixed-use development on 9351-9399 Markham Road. The preliminary report details were reviewed in a meeting last May 13 which proposed a development consisting of two 19-storey residential towers situated on a 4-storey podium. With a combined height of 23 storeys, the project will consist of 438 units and 540 parking spaces (available underground or above-grade parking).

The project is planned to replace several existing industrial and commercial buildings located on the parcel of land. In addition, the development promises 2,197m2 worth of amenity space—1,337m2 of which will be outdoor space provided on the fifth floor and the rest reserved for indoor amenities in the heart of Mount Joy.

For those interested in the surrounding community, there is the Mount Joy Community Center and other community amenities further east. The area is also accessible via public transit—having the Mount Joy GO station north and a Metrolinx corridor east of the lot. Residents in this area have numerous retail plazas, restaurants, park space, and elementary and secondary schools at their disposal. Overall, the area is promising for residents looking to find a community-integrated and accessible place to live.
